Are you thinking of taking the plunge into the One Chip Challenge? You may want to think again. This TikTok craze is a tall order, even for seasoned spicy food veterans. It is hard on the body and can leave you curled up in a ball. This crazy challenge hurts the stomach, but the pain is usually temporary. The level of discomfort depends on factors like your pre-existing health conditions, your degree of preparedness for the challenge, and how well you remedy the side effects soon after the challenge.

How The One Chip Challenge Works

Spicy snacks are a seasonal treat that seems to arrive and go every year, each one trying to hit a home run with fans of extreme heat. Paqui makes some of the hottest chips in the world, like nacho cheese and salsa verde.

In 2021, they launched a huge social campaign that featured a unique ‘One Chip Challenge.’ This campaign allowed people to eat extremely hot chips – made with real Scorpion Pepper and Carolina Reaper Peppers – with a Scoville Heat Unit of 2 million and 1.2 million.

The One Chip Challenge principle is easy: Eat only one chip and test how long you can stay without eating or even having a drink. Even passionate spice lovers cannot bear the heat without having a remedy.

One Chip Challenge Side Effects

Some folks can take a few spicy chips and still be fine, while others can be completely helpless. While many factors can cause serious reactions, consuming spicy chips will likely cause you to experience severe discomfort.

When you have to digest some spicy chips, the nerve endings in your body react with the chemicals in the chips, causing you to feel a lot of discomforts. But no, the hot oil won’t cause any lasting problems.

Fortunately, most people recover within a couple of hours after eating the chip. However, others take longer to recover based on their tolerance to spicy food. Search for One Chip Challenge on YouTube, and you’ll find hundreds of videos of people trying to eat the chip. Some schools had to warn parents that their children could have seizures after eating the chip.

Three kids from Lodi, California, were admitted to a hospital after eating a chip that contained spicy food. They were suffering from nausea and vomiting and had difficulty breathing. These symptoms typically occur in people who have limited experience with spicy food. Paqui puts warnings on their products so that those who want to try to take the Paqui test know what they’re getting into.

Extreme Reactions to One Chip Challenge

Chips with a special recipe from Paqui’s aren’t the only food that causes people to feel sick; eating too much spices can also cause nausea and vomiting. One person actually burnt a hole in his esophagus while vomiting because of overindulging in spicy foods. A study showed that the esophagus can rupture due to vomiting in excess when eating spicy food.

Who Shouldn’t Attempt the One Chip Challenge?

Don’t attempt the One Chip Challenge if you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other similar stomach problems. Also, avoid doing the challenge if you are allergic to chili peppers or if you are pregnant. Studies show that people with stomach problems such as IBS should avoid excessive heat. Engaging in this challenge could be disastrous if you’re sensitive to hot food.

The Spicy Ingredients in One Chip Challenge

There’re many reasons why spicy foods seem to make people feel nauseated. It all comes down to the oils in the peppers, which make them more powerful than others.

1. Capsaicin Compounds

Capsaicin in peppers is what makes them spicy and hot. If you eat something spicy, you’re inhaling a bitter taste from a plant designed to prevent people from eating it again.

Some plants produce capsaicin, which causes the burning sensation people experience when eating a hot pepper. That’s exactly why people want to keep eating peppers. It causes burning sensations that release happy hormones in your brain, which encourage you to eat more peppers.

2. Scoville Measurements

Scoville scale was invented by Wilbur Scoville in 1882, measuring the hotness of pepper from 0 to 15 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). To measure the hotness, the pepper is ground and then mixed with water until it is not easy to taste or smell. Scoville ratings are determined by measuring the heat generated by a single chip.

Paqui, who designed the chip that is the subject of the One Chip Challenge, has not recorded the exact Scoville rating of their chip. It’s difficult to say what the exact Scoville rating is of a chip, but you can see that it is very hot.

Paqui Chips used in the One Chip Challenge are estimated to be between 1.2 million and 2 million SHUs. This line includes two different types of peppers used in cayenne pepper, namely: the Carolina Reaper and the Scorpion peppers.

3. Carolina Reaper Pepper

This pepper is the first pepper added to a spicy mix. The Carolina reaper pepper is one of the quickest heating-up peppers in the world. It is rated at a Scoville number between 1.7 and 2.2 million.

4. Scorpion Pepper

Originating in Trinidad and Tobago, scorpion pepper is not as hot. Scoville scale estimates it to be 1.2 million units.

How To Prepare for One Chip Challenge

It is usually a good idea to eat a big meal just before you start this challenge because spicy foods are not good on an empty stomach. Rice or bread is good, as is some cheese, and if you have a little milk in your mouth after you finish eating, that would be great.

One of the best ways to cool down your body and reduce the feeling of heat in your mouth and stomach is to drink milk. You may want to take things to the next level by taking smaller bites of citrus fruits like lemon or lime.

The acid in these fruits absorbs the capsaicin in the food, and then it cools down the heat. The alcohol reacts with the capsaicin before neutralizing it, which means that the spicy food tastes much more pleasant.

What to Do if Your Stomach Hurts after One Chip Challenge?

Because milk has a strong chemical composition, it can relieve mouth and throat irritation caused by eating foods that contain capsaicin. You should wash your hands well with soap and water after touching the chip, as the chemicals in capsaicin may transfer to other parts of your body (such as your skin) and cause irritation. If you get any capsaicin in your eyes, immediately rinse them with warm water.

If you eat something that contains capsaicin, it can cause your mouth to feel really painful or cause you to feel burning or pain in your stomach. Consuming large amounts of capsaicin may cause more serious health problems, such as severe chest pain, heart palpitations, and heart attacks.

Consuming large amounts of capsaicin can also cause vomiting, which causes serious stomach pain and even causes esophageal damage. There will be some pain after doing the One Chip Challenge. It doesn’t matter how good your mind is when dealing with hot peppers like those from the Carolina Reaper peppers.

If you want to manage your pain, try some of the tips that we’ve mentioned, such as drinking a lot of milk or eating a slice of lemon. When you start to feel pain, it should subside after some time. If you feel very anxious, that’s normal. Just take a break and lie down. But if something severely bothers you, medical help may be necessary. Always seek medical attention if you have serious symptoms like difficulty breathing or excessive vomiting.

How Long Does the One Chip Challenge Last?

The internet was overwhelmed with videos from people trying out the One Chip Challenge, and the results were hilarious! Chips leave people red-faced, drenched in sweat, and extremely anxious, but how long do they last?

It can cause you to feel sick for up to 24 hours if you are allergic to spicy food. Many people who participated in this challenge started to feel very sick shortly after eating the chips. Some people had severe stomach pains or even vomiting and diarrhea within the first 3 hours. It shocked many brave people all over the world, and it gets hotter every year!

Wrapping Up

When thinking about trying the One Chip Challenge, think carefully about how much heat you can handle. People call it a “challenge” for a reason – you must be able to handle a lot of pain if you attempt to eat a chip that contains millions of scorching hot units (SHUs). The chip will probably hurt a lot of people. Take additional precautions to avoid experiencing severe adverse reactions to eating the chip. Engage in such a challenge at your own risk!
